Less pressure, perhaps?

Just wondering out loud... would either of the following two options work for the set of people who are put off by aggregation tools because the "read/unread" status feels like unwanted pressure? Something like:
  1. Read statuses off by default? With an ability to toggle them globally?
  2. Highlighting today's items (say, as bold) and then keep the rest as normal font-styling?
Dunno. It'd be fun to have to test it.

Bloglines lets you do a lot of what you suggested and it is web-based so you can get at it from home and work. It's not perfect, but it is the best I've seen so far.

I think both are a good idea. Maybe an onhover background color for headlines that haven't been read...there's no pressure, yet it gives you instant feedback of a headline's status.

The latter sounds a lot more effective to me. Also (some aggregator probably already does this) email-style filtering would be pretty hot. Even hotter: Bayesian filtering, not for spam but for subjects of special interest.
