Subscriber counts for massless
So, thanks for the statistics, Justin! Until very recently, we weren't able to show subscriber counts for Google Reader but Justin and the team were able to change that, so now we're serving some stats to make analysis easier for publishers and feed redistributors. The image above shows the subscriber counts for various feed readers for this blog.
If you're wondering to what "zhuaxia" refers, it's a Chinese feed reader and aggregator. Wish I could read Chinese, as I'm a fan of any design that features a pig in the logo. (see below) Doing a fly-by of Zhuaxia and can't read Chinese? Click on the leftmost, blue icon just below the logo to enter. Then click on the link that's just left of the word "OPML" to do a search for your favorite feed by keyword, feed URL, or site URL.

With help from some of your own company magic you actually can read it ;) (I found a Google Translate bookmarklet that forward current page address to Google, that automatically decides the language to translate from. Love it!)

Really great to see this statistic black hole caused by Google Reader to be lightened up!
However, in theory, could this allow someone to send fake user agents to a feed in purpose to mess up the Google Reader statistics for the webmaster?

The webmaster can verify the IP address of the feed request and see if it came from the correct owner. They could use the ARIN WHOIS site, for example. A sophisticated forger could try IP spoofing but that's harder for the casual black hat to accomplish and there's ways to sniff that out as well.
