Sure, but... doesn't gossip suggest the innate willingness of a community to agree, wordlessly and almost artfully, on acceptable mores? It seems instinctual and, on occasion, dangerous, but may be yet another indication of a genetically-derived understanding of the importance (and potential beauty) of human interrelationships. I find the algorithms that guide our societies beautiful...(-what's wrong with me?-) - but I liked the movie 'Unbreakable' and can barely be trusted to speed up in the far left lane as needed.
